Today's cities face complex challenges: unchecked urban sprawl, regional imbalances, tensions between development and conservation, rapid demographic shifts, and unpredictable climate crises. Addressing these requires the ability to understand the multidimensional nature of urban problems and propose comprehensive solutions.
The Department of Urban Planning and Engineering at Yonsei University pursues an integrated approach encompassing both pure and applied disciplines, grounded in a spirit of truth and freedom. It researches rational and efficient methods for urban planning, management, and development, with the goal of practically improving the quality of life for urban residents. The curriculum spans from the fundamentals of urban engineering to cutting-edge technology and diverse data applications. In addition to theoretical instruction across related disciplines, the department offers student-led projects targeting real sites to cultivate hands-on competence.
The department consistently produces outstanding research results in urban theory, methodology development, and empirical studies, publishing influential findings internationally and maintaining active collaborations with domestic and international researchers. It actively encourages challenging research and continues to expand its internationalization infrastructure to develop global leaders in urban planning.
